Quick start

Who this is for

  • You cannot work, or you expect a long absence, and you had employer disability coverage
  • You want to know whether SSDI, SSI, or a state program is a separate path from employer benefits
  • You need workplace accommodations or leave that can protect income
  • Healthcare costs or a caregiver’s lost wages are part of the same household problem
  • A prior application was denied and an appeal clock may be running

Why it matters

  • An employer STD or LTD claim you have not filed
  • An SSA application or appeal status on ssa.gov
  • A state disability or paid-leave program that is not federal SSDI
  • Accommodation or leave options that keep a job while you sort benefits
  • Healthcare-cost or caregiver-support programs that are not the same as a cash disability benefit

Do these first

  1. Open my Social Security if a federal application is in play. Open the official source for this step.
  2. Read SSA’s disability overview to separate SSDI from SSI. Open the official source for this step.
  3. File or check the employer STD/LTD claim on the insurer’s official portal. Complete this step, then continue.
  4. Search your official state disability or paid-leave page. Complete this step, then continue.
  5. If SSA denied the claim, use the official appeal timeline. Open the official source for this step.

Direct answer

Disability-related money and protections can come from employer short- or long-term disability, Social Security Disability Insurance or SSI, state programs, workplace accommodations, healthcare-cost programs, and caregiver support. Start with official SSA, employer, and state pages. This mini-audit never asks for a diagnosis and never needs medical records in MoneyPotential.

Five-step process

Do these in order. Open a detail only if you need it.

  1. Open my Social Security if a federal application is in play

Check application or appeal status only on ssa.gov.

  2. Read SSA’s disability overview to separate SSDI from SSI

Do not pay a service that copies these free applications.

Action: Open the official source for this step.

  3. File or check the employer STD/LTD claim on the insurer’s official portal

Use the deadline in the policy booklet. Enter medical evidence only there.

Action: Complete this step, then continue.

  4. Search your official state disability or paid-leave page

State programs are not claimed through MoneyPotential and are not the same form as SSDI.

Action: Complete this step, then continue.

  5. If SSA denied the claim, use the official appeal timeline

Appeal windows are short. Confirm the date on the denial letter.

Action: Open the official source for this step.

  • Did a recent employer offer short- or long-term disability insurance?

  • Have you created a my Social Security account or started an SSDI or SSI application?

  • Does your state offer its own disability or paid-leave program?

  • Do you need workplace leave or accommodations information without sharing a diagnosis here?

  • Is a caregiver’s income or a household healthcare cost part of the problem?

Do not send a diagnosis

Use work-status categories (working, reduced hours, not working), coverage types, and application-status categories only. Medical details belong on SSA.gov, the employer’s insurer portal, or a clinician’s office.

Employer short- and long-term disability

Ask HR or the insurer for the filing window — often measured in days or weeks from the last day worked. STD and LTD are contracts, not SSA decisions. A denial on one path does not answer the other.

Social Security and state programs

SSDI is work-credit based. SSI is need-based with resource rules. Apply and appeal only on ssa.gov. Some states run separate disability insurance or paid family leave — search the official state labor or disability site, not a paid “file your claim” service.

Workplace accommodations, healthcare expenses, and caregiver support
  • Job-accommodation and leave questions can start with the employer’s HR process and official EEOC or DOL leave pages
  • Healthcare bills use the medical-bill mini-audit — still without diagnoses here
  • Caregiver support and tax help have a separate guide so household roles stay distinct from the worker’s benefit applications
What information to gather
  • Work-status category and last day worked, if any. Starts employer and some state clocks
  • Whether employer STD/LTD existed. Separate from SSA
  • SSA application or appeal status category. Avoids restarting a claim that should be appealed
  • State of residence. Finds official state paid-leave or disability pages

Never paste a diagnosis, medical record, or Social Security number into MoneyPotential. Enter those only on ssa.gov, the employer insurer, or the official state site.

How to interpret the result
  • Confirmed. An official SSA, state, or insurer portal shows filed, approved, paid, or a dated denial with an appeal path.
  • Likely. You had coverage or work credits, and an application is in progress but not decided.
  • Possible. You have not checked employer coverage or a state program yet.
  • Professional review. Appeals, overpayments, or representative-payee questions may need an SSA-recognized representative or attorney.
If nothing appears
  • Confirm whether an employer policy existed even after you left the job
  • Use SSA’s official help and listed third-party representatives — not guaranteed-approval ads
  • Check Medicaid, SNAP, or state interim help as separate applications
  • Open the caregiver guide if the household issue is a caregiver’s cost, not the worker’s claim
  • Do not refile from scratch if an appeal window is still open
Deadlines and exceptions

SSA generally allows 60 days from the denial date to appeal (plus a short mailing allowance stated on SSA pages). Employer STD/LTD deadlines are policy-specific and can be much shorter. Last verified: August 2026.

Scam warnings
  • SSA will not demand gift cards or threaten arrest by phone or text.
  • No one can guarantee SSDI approval for a fee.
  • Enter identity information only on ssa.gov or the official insurer site — never into MoneyPotential.
