Mini-audit guide

How to Read an Explanation of Benefits

An EOB is not a bill. Learn the four figures that let you compare a provider statement with what the plan says you owe.

Reviewed August 20266-minute guideOfficial sources

Quick start

Who this is for

  • You have a provider bill and can download an EOB
  • The amounts on the two documents do not match
  • You do not yet know whether this is a billing error or a valid balance

Why it matters

  • An insurance payment that never posted
  • A deductible, copay, or coinsurance that matches the EOB
  • A non-covered line that needs an appeal instead of a billing call

Do these first

  1. Open the EOB for the service date. Open the official source for this step.
  2. Write the four figures. Complete this step, then continue.
  3. Compare the provider bill. Complete this step, then continue.
  4. Name the mismatch if one exists. Complete this step, then continue.
  5. Return to the medical-bill hub. Complete this step, then continue.

Direct answer

Find amount billed, the allowed or negotiated amount, the plan payment, and the patient-responsibility figure for the same service date. If the provider “you owe” is higher than the EOB patient responsibility, stop and ask billing to post insurance or correct the claim before you pay.

Five-step process

Do these in order. Open a detail only if you need it.

  1. Open the EOB for the service date

Use the insurer portal or request a copy. Do not use a collections letter as a substitute.

Action: Open the official source for this step.

  2. Write the four figures

Amount billed, allowed amount, plan payment, and patient responsibility — as ranges, not a member ID.

Action: Complete this step, then continue.

  3. Compare the provider bill

Match date of service and the “you owe” total to the EOB patient responsibility.

Action: Complete this step, then continue.

  4. Name the mismatch if one exists

Payment not posted, duplicate line, or a coverage denial printed on the EOB.

Action: Complete this step, then continue.

  5. Return to the medical-bill hub

Choose the matching situation and the official next step.

Action: Complete this step, then continue.

Answer quickly — your responses stay in this browser only (localStorage) and are never sent to MoneyPotential servers.

  • Can you download the EOB for this service date?

  • Do you have the provider bill for the same date?

  • Does the provider “you owe” differ from the EOB patient responsibility?

What information to gather
  • Service date. Ties the EOB to the bill
  • Four generalized amounts. Shows whether the bill is wrong or valid

Gather only what official claim forms require. Never enter your full Social Security number, bank login credentials, or passwords into MoneyPotential — use official .gov or verified agency portals only.

How to interpret the result
  • Confirmed. Official records show a match with your identity and a clear claim or appeal path. Proceed through the verified portal with documentation ready.
  • Likely. Records strongly suggest a match, but verification documents or a secondary search step is still required before treating funds as yours.
  • Possible. A partial match or related account appears. Keep searching under name variations, former addresses, or related federal/state programs.
  • Professional review. Complex ownership, legal estate, tax, or plan-administrator disputes may need a fiduciary advisor, tax professional, or attorney.
If nothing appears
  • Request the EOB from the plan if the portal is empty
  • Ask whether the claim is still processing
  • Do not pay a collector from a summary balance alone
Deadlines and exceptions

EOBs can arrive after the first provider statement. Wait for the EOB before treating a first bill as final. Last verified: August 2026.

Scam warnings
  • Do not enter a member ID into MoneyPotential.
  • A caller who asks you to read the entire EOB aloud may be fishing for identifiers.
